- The Rákosi era covers almost the entire history of Hungary between 1945 and 1956. In a narrower sense it existed between 1948 and 1953, and in a broader sense between 1947 and 1956. It was named after its leader, Mátyás Rákosi, who established a total dictatorship under Stalinist rule and who came to the top of the power pyramid in 1947-48. In 1949, he had a new constitution and a new state coat of arms ("Rákosi emblem") drawn up on the Soviet model, and the era of the police state and total terror began
