At the 2006 National Census, its population was 784,602 in 202,588 households. The following census in 2011 counted 851,405 people in 242,311 households. The latest census in 2016 showed a population of 946,651 people in 286,484 households.

A majority of the people of Kermanshah are bilingual in Southern Kurdish and Persian, and the city is the largest Kurdish city in Iran.[10][11] Kermanshah has a moderate and mountainous climate.[12][13][14][15] Most of the inhabitants of Kermanshah are Shia Muslims, but there are also Sunni Muslims, Christians,[16] and followers of Yarsanism.[17][18]
