Biography
Daguerreotypists specialised in hand-coloured portraits, also sellers of photographic supplies; founded by two brothers, Louis Frédéric and Léopold Ernest Mayer; worked in collaboration with Louis Pierson (q.v.) by 1855, forming an extremely successful firm, in favour with imperial and royal courts all over Europe; they were appointed photographers to Napoléon III, the King of Wurtemberg, the King of Portugal, the King of Sweden, and the Queen of the Low countries. Pierson eventually became sole owner of the firm (1860s?) which continued to trade as 'Mayer & Pierson'; during the 1870s Pierson struck a partnership with his son in law, Gaston Braun, and the name 'Mayer & Pierson' was dropped.
